How to Get Better

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:31-32 NKJV).”

I thought it would be a good idea to provide a quick synopsis as to what is needed to make progress. So, here's a quick checklist.

  • Get saved. This is always the first step.
  • Read your Bible at least once every day—preferably in the morning. Twice a day is much better.
  • Write selected Scriptures on 3X5 cards to be memorized and/or for daily review.
  • Obey Scripture. Don't deceive yourself into believing that just reading the Bible does the trick.
  • As a general rule, don't use psychotropic medications. With few exceptions, psych drugs should only be considered if—without the drugs—you are a danger to yourself or others.
  • As a general rule, avoid alcohol and illegal drugs. Don't do anything that could lead to an addiction.
  • Take care of your physical health. For example, eat a healthy diet.
  • Forgive others and yourself as well.
  • Put on the Armor of God every morning.
  • Remember to pray every day. Establish a prayer routine.
  • Go to church every week.
  • Get counsel and support from other Christians. Don't isolate.
  • Use common sense. Walk wisely. If you lack wisdom, pray for it.
  • Be persistent. Don't give up. Going through trials is part of the Christian life: "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all (Psalm 34:19 NASB)."

So that's it. This checklist should give you an idea as to whether you are on the right track. Or whether some big changes are needed.
