Do What?"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV)." The Bible gives us basic instructions on how we are to live our lives each day. And this is one important passage. Let's look at it carefully. First, the Bible says to "be joyful always." It's a command from God. Even though there are problems. And we may not feel like it. Adjust your attitude anyway. Make an effort to enjoy each day: "This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24 NKJV)." Second, "pray continually." I have been amazed at how, when I am driving down the freeway, I can so easily miss a turn when I am praying. Praying can occupy your mind in a way that is exclusive of anything else. And that's one reason why it's so important: Sometimes we cannot keep negative thoughts out of our minds by self-effort. But we can always force ourselves to pray and keep praying. As long as we're praising God, trusting God, thanking God and praying for other people, our mind is occupied and Satan simply cannot get in. Third, "give thanks in all circumstances." Yes there are problems. There often are. However, give thanks anyway. Give thanks when things are going well. This is easy--but don't forget. And give thanks when there are problems. You can do this because "God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28 NASB)." Finally, why should we do these things: Because "this is God will for you in Christ Jesus." Or to put it another way: "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world (John 16:33 NKJV).”
